Michigan is home to the Midwest’s most exciting college campuses. Local universities and colleges are known for fostering passionate student cultures (Go Wolverines! Go Spartans!). And on the academic side, students also graduate at a higher rate compared to neighboring states like Wisconsin and Ohio.

Clearly, academics and student culture are important for the best colleges in Michigan. But state residents will also find that financial aid isn’t too shabby. In fact, US News ranks Michigan #5 in terms of opportunity and #3 in terms of affordability among all US states for college students.

This is because the state offers dozens of student grants for in-state residents. Below, you can take a few shortcuts with our overview of top Michigan colleges, including college tuition and financial aid estimates. To show out-of-state students some love, we’ve also compiled institutional student grants from each school.

Overview of College Grants & Scholarships in Michigan

Grants for In-State Students

· Michigan Tuition Grant: The MichiganTuition Grant is awarded to students who demonstrate financial need. Students must be enrolled at least half time at a non-profit independent college and must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards.

· Michigan Reconnect: The MichiganReconnect Grant targets learners who are aged 25 years or above. The grant is awarded to those earning an associate’s degree or a skill certification program at in-district community colleges.

· Michigan Tuition Incentive Program (TIP): The TIP program connects financial aid to in-state students who pursue an associate’s degree, a certificate program, or a four-year degree within four years of graduating from high school. TIP pays in full for associates’ degrees and certificate programs. It pays up to $2,000 for four-year programs.

· Michigan Competitive Scholarship (MCS): The Michigan Competitive Scholarship is a state grant that awards funds based on both financial need and academic merit. Students must submit an ACT/SAT score with their FAFSA to be eligible.

· Grand Rapids Promise: The Grand RapidsPromise is a scholarship fund for students living in Grand Rapids who enroll at the local Grand Rapids Community College. To be eligible, a student must have attended high school in Grand Rapids, then meet SAP requirements.
